Fantasy Aisle

An introduction to the blog as soon as I get the Cheeto dust off of my fingers...

Welcome to "What's Jon Snacking On?", a blog about snacks from someone who considers himself a serious snacker.  First thing you should know before reading future posts is that I am not serious.  I am not a food professional.  I am not a "foodie".  I will not throw a fit at your party if you don't have Heluva Good French Onion dip for your potato chips.

What I am is a guy who thinks a lot about snacks: what's good, what's stupid, and what's possible.  I'm a guy that paces up and down the snack isle while his wife is busy picking up the vegetables and meat for the week.  I'm a guy who thinks popcorn at the movies is properly priced (based on value).  I'm a guy that wants to meet the people at Doritos that named a flavor "Late Night All Nighter Cheeseburger".  I'm a guy that has been putting Easy Cheese in his Bugles since high school (and will never stop).  I believe this stuff is worth discussing, so I felt compelled to start a blog about it and have fun with some opinions.

Some other things you should know:

- This is my first attempt at a blog.  It is heavily influenced by two bloggers in particular:  TV critic Alan Sepinwall from What's Alan Watching? and Paul Lukas from Uni Watch.  The layout is nearly identical to Sepinwall's old blog (he is now at Hitfix).  You'll notice the header is the same design.  For my header, my current top four "must cart" snacks will be shown.  It will be used as a power rankings of some sort, and a quick answer to the question that will drive this blog.  When I review or discuss snacks, it will basically come down to whether I think it's good or stupid.  I got this from Paul Lukas, who critiques uniforms and design in sports, and that seems to work well.

- I don't know anything about food science.  However I do know about the those magic messages my taste buds send to my brain when I eat a well conceived arrangement of ingredients.

- One might expect a guy this obsessed with snacking to look like John Goodman.  I remain in respectable shape because I value snacks that are able to take a healthier approach without compromising taste.  I want to spread the word on brands that are doing it right.

- From time to time I may feel compelled to review a breakfast/lunch/dinner item I come across.  This will primarily be a blog about snack aisle snacks, but sometimes a place like KFC will get an idea like the infamous "Double Down" and it will warrant a post.  Plus, Taco Bell's "Fourth Meal" marketing campaign pretty much acknowledges the fact that fast food really shouldn't be considered breakfast, lunch, or dinner anyway.  Also, I'm always looking for good take-to-work lunch options, and I will continue my quest to find the right rotation.

- I'm not aspiring to do this professionally, or get any kind of money out of it, but if the good people at Popchips come across the blog and wanted to send me samples, I'd totally accept.

So continue to check back for future posts.  I have a bunch of ideas lined up that I think you'll enjoy.  Until then, the next time you walk down that magic aisle at the supermarket or have to choose a side to go with your turkey sub, I hope you consider What's Jon Snacking On.
